In the center, Sudakov and Pavlidis work as a striking partnership. Pavlidis acts as a target man to hold up the ball and lay it off to others, while Sudakov looks to find spaces between the lines and arrive late into the box. The team looks to hit in behind on the transition to exploit any gaps.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, which can force many errors in the opponent build up. SL Benfica also creates wide overloads when the full backs push up to support the wingers. This creates numerical superiority in wide areas and allows the team to whip it in or cut it back from the byline.
