Argentina relies on a heavy press and quick transitions when playing a 5-3-2. This formation is built to sit in a compact mid-block and then strike with speed when the ball is won. Up front, Argentina uses two forwards in a partnership. Julián Álvarez acts as a pressing centre-forward who works tirelessly to force a long ball from the opposition. He plays alongside Lionel Messi, the captain, who operates as a second striker in the hole. Messi often pulls wide or drops into midfield to find the feet of the striker or to create space for others. The attack relies on combinations in tight spaces and the ability of the wing backs to deliver early crosses into the box.

One major advantage for Argentina is the numerical superiority in midfield when they transition from a back five into a more attacking look. The team also uses the speed of transition to exploit gaps left by opponents who commit too many players forward.
