Starting Lineup

WALTON · WALTERS · HOLGATE (VC) · WHARTON · PICKERING · TRAVIS (C) · REID · DONOVAN · KARETSAS · DOLAN · BALLARD

Blackburn aim to play a vertical game using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to play with high intensity and focus on quick transitions to catch teams out. The goal is to bypass the midfield and use the front four to overwhelm the opposition quickly.

WALTON acts as the goalkeeper to command the penalty area. A flat back four forms the defensive line, with WHARTON playing as the left centre-back to provide cover. HOLGATE acts as the vice captain and plays as the right centre-back, looking to win the header and clear the lines. WALTERS and PICKERING operate as full backs, tasked with holding the line or pushing up to support the wide areas. The defensive unit works to squeeze the space and protect the central area.

The midfield relies on a double pivot to connect the back four to the attack. Captain TRAVIS plays in the right central midfield role, where he works to shield the defense and win the second ball. REID plays as the left central midfielder, tasked to carry the ball forward and link the defensive and attacking lines. This pair must cover a lot of ground to ensure the team does not get caught out when the ball is lost in transition.

In the attacking phase, Blackburn use four players across the front line to stretch the defence. DONOVAN and DOLAN act as wide wingers who look to get to the byline and deliver crosses. KARETSAS and BALLARD lead the line as a partnership of two forwards. They look to link up in tight spaces or hit in behind on the transition to catch the defense off guard. The forwards also work to press from the front to win the ball back high up the pitch.

This formation offers the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of the full backs and wingers. By pushing the line forward, Blackburn can isolate wide players in one on one situations to create chances. The team can also press in pairs to trigger a press and force a long ball from the opponent.

The 4-2-4 formation is an aggressive way to play that prioritizes attacking numbers and directness. This lineup is best suited for games where the team needs to overwhelm an opponent that sits deep in a low block.
