Fabian and Jorge form the central pairing, where Jorge plays as a covering defender while Fabian looks to win the second ball. This unit works together to maintain a mid-block, ensuring they do not leave too much space behind the defenders.

The midfield uses a three-man central unit supported by a more advanced playmaker. Enderson and Richard operate as a double pivot to shield the defence and disrupt play. Kike and Maldonado sit just ahead to win the second ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Gabriel R plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space and create chances. This five man unit allows Portugal to compress the midfield and deny the turn to opposition players.

In the attacking phase, Calderon acts as a lone striker. He must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to move forward. The team relies on the wide players and the attacking ten to support him during transitions. Calderon often has to fight for long balls to bring others into the game. When the team wins the ball, the goal is to move it quickly to Gabriel R to find a pass through the defence or to exploit space out wide.
