Starting Lineup

Chelsea focuses on a high press and heavy attacking volume through a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to pin the opposition back and create immediate pressure in the final third. The goalkeeper acts as the first line of defense before the back four organizes. A flat back four consists of the RB, LB, RCB, and LCB to defend the width of the pitch. The RCB and LCB must stay compact to protect the central area, while the LB and RB are expected to push up to support the wings. When the team loses the ball, these defenders must quickly drop to prevent long balls, and the central defenders often step up to catch the opponent offside.

In the middle of the pitch, the team employs a double pivot using the LCM and RCM. These two midfielders serve as the engine, with the LCM and RCM tasked to shield the defense and recycle possession. One of these players often drops deep to receive the ball from the defenders, while the other looks to drive forward and connect the defensive unit to the attack. This pair works to win the second ball and prevents the opposition from playing through the center.

The attacking unit is incredibly aggressive, using four players to stretch the opposition. The CF and the CAM playing as a second striker work in a partnership to find space between the lines. On the flanks, the LW and RW act as wide wingers who look to cut inside to create goal scoring chances. The CAM in the center role plays as a shadow striker to arrive late into the box. This front line is designed to press from the front, forcing the opposition to play long and uncomfortable balls.

One major advantage for Chelsea is the ability to create immediate pressure in high areas of the pitch. This lineup allows the team to win the ball back high up the pitch through coordinated waves of pressing. Another strength is the ability to isolate wide players in one on one situations when the wingers get the ball in space. The high number of attackers ensures that the opposition defenders are always under constant pressure.
