Man City look to control matches through heavy possession and a relentless high press using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the ball in the middle of the pitch and squeeze the space available to the opponent. By keeping the players close together, the team can win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately look to play through the lines.

Gianluigi sits between the posts to command the area and start play from the back. The back line operates as a flat back four where Valentino acts as an attacking full back on the right to provide width. Jośko and Ruben act as the two central defenders, with Jośko using his recovery speed to cover space if the line is breached. Rayan plays as the left back, looking to overlap when the ball moves wide. This unit works to keep a high line and catch opponents offside.

The midfield is a crowded five man unit designed to pack the center. Rodri acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Tjjanji and Rayan work as the two central midfielders to drive forward with the ball and connect the lines. On the flanks, Rodrigo and Phil occupy the wide areas to stretch the defence. Phil uses his dribbling style to carry the ball forward, while Rodrigo tracks back to help the full backs. This midfield group works to win the second ball and maintain control.

Erling leads the line as a lone striker and acts as the primary target man. He holds up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the attack. The wide players, Rodrigo and Phil, cut inside to create more central presence and leave space for the full backs. When the team attacks, they look to move the ball quickly to Erling to create runs in behind or find the feet of the striker. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

One major advantage for Man City is the ability to achieve numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. The team can also create wide overloads when Valentino and Phil push high on the right side. This allows them to win it back high up the pitch and transition into an attack with speed. The compact nature of the formation makes it hard to break down once they sit in a mid-block.

This 4-5-1 formation provides Man City with a way to dominate territory through ball retention and high pressure. It is best suited for games where the team needs to control the tempo against a low block.
