Tjjanji and Rayan work as the two central midfielders to drive forward with the ball and connect the lines. On the flanks, Rodrigo and Phil occupy the wide areas to stretch the defence. Phil uses his dribbling style to carry the ball forward, while Rodrigo tracks back to help the full backs. This midfield group works to win the second ball and maintain control.

Erling leads the line as a lone striker and acts as the primary target man. He holds up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the attack. The wide players, Rodrigo and Phil, cut inside to create more central presence and leave space for the full backs. When the team attacks, they look to move the ball quickly to Erling to create runs in behind or find the feet of the striker. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

One major advantage for Man City is the ability to achieve numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. The team can also create wide overloads when Valentino and Phil push high on the right side. This allows them to win it back high up the pitch and transition into an attack with speed. The compact nature of the formation makes it hard to break down once they sit in a mid-block.
