Starting Lineup

Nübel · Chabot · Jeltsch · Assignon · Maxi · Chema · Ange · Bilou · Medo · Jamie · Tomas

Stuttgart looks to play with a high press and rapid transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to hunt the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly once it is won. The team relies on verticality to catch opponents off guard before they can get back into position.

Nübel operates between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit functions as a back five with Chema and Ange acting as the central defenders who must cover wide spaces. Chabot sits in the middle to provide height and strength in the air. On the flanks, Jeltsch and Maxi act as attacking wing backs who push high to provide width. These players must track back quickly to form a narrow defensive block when the opposition has possession.

The midfield consists of a two man unit with Tomas and Bilou working in the center. These two players must cover a lot of ground to connect the defense to the attack. Tomas works to win the second ball and drives forward with the ball to break the line. Bilou helps to shield the defense and recycle possession to keep the team moving. They must stay compact to prevent opponents from playing through the middle.

In the final third, Stuttgart uses three attackers to pin the opposition defense. Medo acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Jamie and Assignon play as wide attackers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. They look to isolate one on one wide situations or make runs in behind the back line. This front three presses from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

One main advantage for Stuttgart is the ability to create wide overloads when Jeltsch and Maxi push up to overlap the wingers. The formation also allows for a strong ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back high up the pitch. This creates many chances to attack in transition while the opponent is disorganized.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a very strong defensive base while maintaining a lethal threat on the break. It is best suited for games against teams that try to play out from the back and leave space behind their midfield.
