Gravenberch acts as the carrier who drives forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This duo must be ready to track back and cover the wide areas when the full backs move forward to prevent being caught on the break.

In the attacking third, the team uses two wide players and two central attackers. Simons plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create space, while Gakpo moves from the left to do the same. Reijnders and Memphis operate as a striking partnership. Memphis can hold up the ball to allow others to arrive late into the box, while Reijnders looks for runs in behind. The team uses the width of the pitch to spread the defence and create openings for through balls.

This 4-2-4 formation offers the advantage of massive attacking numbers to create overloads in the final third. The ability to use Dumfries to overlap the winger allows the Netherlands to stretch the defence and pull opponents out of position. Furthermore, the team is capable of breaking quickly during transitions to exploit gaps left by a retreating opponent.
