Blackburn Football Formation

Starting Lineup

Balević · Walters · Boakye · Holgate (VC) · Pickering · Charles · Karetsas · Doherty · Ballard · Donovan · Travis (C)

Blackburn aims to hit teams on the transition through a direct 4-2-4 formation. This lineup relies on high energy to win the ball and quickly move it toward the front four to catch the opposition out of position. The team seeks to stretch the defence by using the full width of the pitch to create chances.

Balević starts between the posts to oversee the defensive line. The back four operates as a flat unit with Walters at right back and Pickering at left back. Holgate and Boakye sit in the center to defend the box and win headers. Walters and Pickering are expected to provide width during build up, while Holgate and Boakye focus on holding the line and covering space behind the midfield.

The midfield operates with a double pivot consisting of Charles and Travis. These two players sit in front of the defence to shield Holgate and Boakye. Charles and Travis must work hard to win the second ball and recycle possession when the attack stalls. They act as the link between the back four and the front line, often having to cover large amounts of ground to stop counter attacks.

Blackburn employs four attackers to pin the opposition back. Doherty plays on the left wing to provide width, while Donovan operates on the right. In the center, Karetsas and Ballard work as a pair of forwards. Ballard and Karetsas can combine to hold up the ball or make runs in behind the defence. The wingers look to cut inside or get to the byline to deliver crosses for the two central strikers.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to attack in waves with four players ready to push forward. This creates immediate pressure on the opponent once the ball is won. The team also benefits from the wide overloads provided when Walters and Pickering push up to support Doherty and Donovan. This pressure can force the opposition to drop deep and defend their own box.

This 4-2-4 formation is designed for a high tempo game that targets defensive gaps. Blackburn will find success using this lineup against opponents that struggle to track runners in the channels.
