Starting Lineup

SK Rapid plays with a heavy focus on high pressing and verticality through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the pitch by flooding the middle and pushing the opposition back into their own half. By using such an aggressive stance, the team seeks to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike before the opposition can get organized.

Hedl stays between the posts to act as the last line of defense. The back line consists of a narrow two man unit featuring Raux Yao and Cvetkovic. These two central defenders must be prepared to step up to squeeze the space and manage large amounts of territory behind them. Because there are only two defenders, they often act as covering players to pick up runners if the high press is bypassed.

The midfield is a massive five man block that controls the center of the pitch. Bolla and J. Auer operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Seidl and Amane act as two inverted eights to occupy the half spaces and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Gulliksen plays as the attacking ten behind the striker to find pockets of space and drive forward with the ball. This heavy midfield presence allows SK Rapid to maintain control and win second balls throughout the game.

In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the defense. Antiste acts as the lone striker to lead the press from the front and hold up the ball. Dahl and Wurmbrand provide width as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create chances. This front line works to pin the last defender and create runs in behind. The combination of width from the wingers and central presence from Antiste forces the opposition to defend against multiple threats simultaneously.

One major tactical advantage of this formation is the overwhelming numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to progress through the center. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves, with the front three and the five midfielders working together to trap the ball. This setup also allows for rapid transitions once the ball is won high up the pitch.

SK Rapid uses this aggressive lineup to suffocate opponents and control the tempo of the match. This formation is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and punish teams that struggle to play out from the back.
