São Paulo Football Formation
Starting Lineup
GETÚLIO · TECÃO · BEZERRA · ANTENOR · CHICÃO · TEODORO · DARIO PEREYRA · ZÉ SÉRGIO · MIRANDINHA · VIANA · WALDIR PERESPrioritizing defensive solidity and quick transitions, São Paulo utilizes a 5-2-3 formation to control space. This lineup is built to sit deep when the ball is lost and use the width of the pitch to stretch opposition blocks. The team looks to protect the central areas first before looking to hit the opponent on the break.
Waldir Peres operates between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line features a back five with Chicão acting as the central anchor to win headers and clear the lines. Bezerra and Tecão play as the wide centre-backs, providing cover and stepping up to intercept passes. Antenor and Getúlio act as attacking wing backs, pushing high up the pitch to provide width. This system allows the defenders to defend zonally while ensuring the wide areas are occupied.
The midfield consists of a two man central unit with Teodoro and Dario Pereyra. Dario Pereyra connects the defensive and attacking lines by receiving the ball from the back and moving it forward. Teodoro helps to shield the defence and press in a mid-block to win the second ball. These two players must work hard to cover the ground between the back five and the front three, ensuring the team stays compact when defending.
São Paulo uses three attackers to pin the last defender and stretch the opposition. Mirandinha acts as a pressing centre forward to lead the line and hold up the ball. Viana and Zé Sérgio play as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create chances. This front three is designed to create runs in behind and allow the wing backs to overlap the winger. The attackers work in combinations to find space between the lines.
The main advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Getúlio and Antenor. By having five players back, São Paulo can also achieve great compactness when defending in a low block. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the middle of the pitch. The speed of transition from the midfield to the front three allows the team to catch opponents out of position.
This 5-2-3 lineup relies on the discipline of the wide centre-backs and the energy of the wing backs. It is a formation best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their full backs.
