Santoro guards the goal to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back five, featuring a central trio of Maragnoni, Trossero, and Sa to hold the line. Maragnoni acts as the central anchor, while Trossero and Sa cover the wider channels. Pavoni and Clausen act as attacking wing backs, pushing up to provide width or tracking back to form a compact block. The defensive unit works to squeeze the space and win the second ball.

The midfield relies on a double pivot with Sastre and Bochini. Sastre works to shield the defense and deny the turn of opposition players. Bochini acts as the carrier to drive forward with the ball and link the defensive and attacking lines. They work to recycle possession and play through the lines to find the forwards. Sastre often drops deep to collect the ball, while Bochini looks to arrive late into the box.

In the final third, Independiente uses three attackers. Erico operates as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line, while Bertoni and Burruchaga act as wide wingers who cut inside. This movement allows Pavoni and Clausen to overlap and provide crosses from the byline. The attack focuses on combinations to hit in behind on the transition, often looking to isolate a one on one wide or find Erico to hold up the ball.
