Starting Lineup

Carrizo · Yacono · Passarella · Vaghi · Sorín · Gallego · Rossi · Beto Alonso · Charro Moreno · Pedernera · Labruna

River plays with a heavy attacking intent using a 4-3-3. The team seeks to control the game through high pressure and quick ball movement to push the opposition into their own half. This lineup is built to play a vertical style of football that prioritizes breaking lines over slow possession.

Carrizo sits in goal to command the area and act as the last line of defense. The defensive unit employs a high line with a back four consisting of Yacono at right back and Sorín at left back. Both Sorín and Yacono are expected to overlap the wingers to provide width and support the attack. Vaghi and Passarella operate as the central defenders. Passarella acts as a ball playing defender who can carry the ball forward, while Vaghi provides cover and wins the second ball to maintain the line.

The midfield works to connect the defense to the attack through a trio of players. Rossi and Gallego operate in the central spaces to shield the defense and win possession. Rossi works to intercept passes and recycle possession, while Gallego drives forward to carry the ball into the final third. Beto Alonso plays in the hole as an attacking midfielder to play through the lines and create chances. This midfield group works to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch.

In the attacking phase, River uses three players across the front. Pedernera acts as the main striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Labruna and Charro Moreno occupy the wide areas as wingers, with Labruna looking to cut inside and Charro Moreno to stretch the defense. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The team attacks in combinations to create runs in behind or to get to the byline and deliver early crosses.

One tactical advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The positioning of Beto Alonso allows the team to trap opponents in tight spaces near the penalty area. Additionally, the overlap from Sorín and Yacono creates wide overloads that isolate wide players in one on one situations. This constant pressure forces mistakes from the opposition.

This 4-3-3 formation relies on intense pressing and rapid verticality to overwhelm opponents. It is most effective when River faces a team that tries to play out from the back or sits deep in a low block.
