Mazurkiewicz operates between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back four stays relatively narrow to protect the central areas. Figueroa and Matosas act as the central pair, with Figueroa providing cover and Matosas looking to win headers. Víctor Andrade and Diogo function as the wide defenders, where Víctor Andrade can push up to provide width while Diogo stays closer to the center to ensure security. The unit works together to maintain a compact block and deny passing lanes to the opposition.

The midfield is a dense block consisting of five players. Varela and Bengoechea act as a double pivot to shield the defense and intercept play. They sit in front of the back four to stop any direct runs. Joya, Rocha, and Goncalves occupy the spaces ahead of the pivot, acting as a bridge between the defense and the lone striker. These three players look to press in a mid-block and win the second ball to start attacks. They move to squeeze the space and recycle possession when the team regains the ball.

In the attacking phase, the team utilizes a lone striker in Spencer. His main job is to hold up the ball and wait for the midfield to join the move. Since there is only one forward, the wide players must cut inside to support him in the central areas. The attack is built through quick vertical passes once the ball is won in the middle. Spencer often has to fight for position against two center backs, looking to lay it off to oncoming runners like Goncalves or Rocha.

One major strength for Peñarol is the heavy density in the central zone. By packing the midfield, the team makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. Another advantage is the ability to win the ball back high up the pitch using the five-man midfield to trigger a press. This creates immediate chances to hit the opposition on the transition before they can set their defensive line.
