Figueroa and Galvão need to hold the line and win the header when the ball comes in from deep. They work together to defend zonally and ensure the opposition cannot find space between them.

The midfield works as a central engine for Internacional. Carpegiani and Falcão form a double pivot to protect the back four. Carpegiani works to intercept passes and recycle possession, while Falcão uses his passing range to drive the team forward. Ahead of them, Vladomiro and Tesourinha occupy the half-spaces to act as the link between the defensive block and the attack. They are tasked to press aggressively and arrive late into the box to support the strikers.

In the final third, the team uses two forwards in a partnership. D’Alessandro operates as a more creative presence, often dropping into the hole to find the feet of his teammates. Claudomiro works alongside him to push the opposition back line. D’Alessandro looks to play through the lines with a through ball, while Claudomiro makes runs in behind to stretch the defense. The wingers, Vladomiro and Tesourinha, can cut inside to create overloads or whip it in from wide areas to find the strikers.

This 4-4-2 provides great compactness when defending in a mid-block. The proximity of Carpegiani, Falcão, Vladomiro, and Tesourinha makes it very hard for opponents to play through the middle. The team can also win the second ball in the center of the pitch. When they win possession, they can transition quickly to use the movement of D’Alessandro and Claudomiro to break the lines.

The formation relies on a strong central core to dictate the tempo of the match. It is best suited for games against teams that try to control possession, as Internacional can sit deep and counter at pace.
