Bologna relies on a high press and rapid attacking transitions to overwhelm opponents with a 3-3-4 formation. This lineup is built to push the opposition back into their own half by using heavy numbers in the final third. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately flood the box to create chaos.

Trapp guards the goal and acts as the last line of defense. The back three consists of Marcelo, Moisander, and the captain Vlaar, who leads the defensive unit. Vlaar acts as the right centre-back and provides leadership to the line, while Moisander occupies the left centre-back role. Marcelo holds the middle ground to ensure the defense remains compact. This trio must stay coordinated to defend zonally and ensure they do not get caught out by long balls.

The midfield functions as a single line of three to connect the defense to the attack. Diakité sits in the defensive midfield role to shield the back three and win the second ball. To his sides, Abu and Mahlangu operate as central midfielders who carry the ball forward and press in a mid-block. They must work together to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. This unit is responsible for recycling possession and quickly shifting play to the wide areas.

Bologna utilizes four attackers to stretch the opposition defense. Mabwati and Collison occupy the wide roles as wingers, looking to pull wide and deliver crosses into the box. In the center, M. Diouf and Dost operate as a pair of center forwards. They work in combinations to pin the last defender and make runs in behind. The presence of two strikers forces the opposing center-backs to stay deep, which creates more space for the wingers to cut inside or for the midfielders to arrive late into the box.

This formation offers several tactical advantages, particularly the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By committing four players to the front line, Bologna can trigger a press very high up the pitch to force a long ball. Another strength is the potential for wide overloads when the wingers and wide midfielders combine to isolate defenders in one on one situations.
