River aims to be defensively solid while using a high press to disrupt the opposition. This is a 4-5-1 formation designed to compress the central areas and force the ball wide. The lineup relies on a compact unit to sit deep when out of possession and quick movement to exploit gaps on the turn.

Armani (C) commands the area from in goal to organize the defensive line. The back four consists of Montiel at right back and Acuña at left back, both ready to push up when the team wins the ball. Martínez Quarta acts as the ball playing defender on the right, while Rivero covers the left side of the central pairing. This unit stays narrow to defend the middle, with Martínez Quarta and Rivero working together to win the second ball and clear the lines when under pressure.

The midfield operates as a five man block that can shift between a mid-block and a high press. Portillo sits in a holding role to shield the defense and protect the center. To his sides, Castaño and Galoppo act as the engine, with Galoppo driving forward to carry the ball and Castaño providing balance. Quintero operates in the right half space to create from deep and find the feet of the striker, while Fernández plays as a left attacking midfielder to link the lines.

In the attacking phase, Salas acts as a lone striker to lead the press from the front. The team builds play by using the wide midfielders to stretch the defence, with Quintero and Fernández looking to cut inside to find pockets of space. When River transitions, the goal is to get the ball to Salas quickly so he can hold up the ball and lay it off to the runners. The movement of Quintero and Fernández creates combinations in tight spaces to break the line of the opposition.

One major advantage of this River lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves when the ball is lost. By having Quintero and Fernández close down the opponent, the midfield can squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch. Another strength is the compactness when defending, which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the lines or find space between the units.

This 4-5-1 formation focuses on a hard to beat defensive block and quick central combinations. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession where River can sit deep and hit in behind on the transition.
