FC Utrecht plays with a heavy focus on high pressure and verticality in this 2-5-3 formation. The lineup is built to squeeze the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. This system relies on a high line to keep the team compact and ready to strike with speed.

The GK stays busy behind a very high line of two central defenders. Manu and Fede act as the primary defenders, often having to cover large spaces behind them while Willem provides stability. This narrow defensive block requires the two centre backs to be dominant in the air and quick to intercept long balls. Because the back line only has two players, they must step up to set the offside trap and win the second ball.

The midfield is a dense five man unit that controls the middle third. Mer and Sjors occupy the central roles, while Timo and Maart operate in the left central midfield space. On the right side, Quim and Maart help to control the rhythm. Wide players like Cedric, Dali, and Gilles push up to support the attack. These players must track back to cover the wide areas and ensure the midfield connects the defence and attack.

In the attacking third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Sjors leads the line as a striker, working closely with Maxie on the left and Evert on the right. Maxie and Evert act as wingers to provide width, often looking to get to the byline and deliver early crosses. Sjors looks to find the feet of the striker or run in behind to exploit the space. The wide players like Dali and Gilles push forward to create overloads, allowing the team to combine in tight spaces.

A major advantage for FC Utrecht is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. Having five players in the midfield and three up front creates numerical superiority in the attacking zones. Another strength is the speed of transition. The formation allows for quick switches of play to the wide players to isolate opponents in one on one situations, making it difficult to defend.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk, high reward way to play. It is best used against teams that struggle to play out from the back or those that lack the speed to hit in behind on the transition.
