FC Utrecht focuses on a high press and vertical play to control games. The team uses a 2-5-3 formation to overwhelm the opposition in both the middle and final thirds. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opponent can settle.

The GK stays central to organize the defensive line. Manu/Fede and Willem form a very narrow back two that operates with a high line. These two central defenders must show great awareness to sweep behind the midfield and intercept passes. They are tasked to cover large spaces as the team pushes forward. The defensive unit relies on these two to hold the line and stay compact when the ball is lost.

The midfield area is crowded to ensure control of the ball. Mer/Sjors, Timo/Maart, and Quim/Maart occupy the central zones. Timo/Maart and Quim/Maart drive forward to link play, while Mer/Sjors helps to protect the two defenders. Cedric/Gilles and Dali/Gilles act as attacking midfielders in the half spaces, playing as RAM and LAM. They connect the central core to the front three and help to press the opposition in a mid-block.

The attack features three players working in close proximity. Sjors plays as the main striker to find the feet of the midfielders and lead the press. Maxie and Evert provide the width on the wings as LW and RW. Maxie and Evert often cut inside to create central overloads, which allows Sjors to move into channels. The team looks to play through the lines and use the wide midfielders to deliver crosses or cutbacks into the box.

One main advantage for FC Utrecht is the numerical superiority in the midfield. With five players in the center, they can easily win the second ball and control the tempo. The team also excels at pressing in coordinated waves. The front three and the wider players like Dali/Gilles and Cedric/Gilles can trigger a press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent.

The 2-5-3 formation is a high-intensity lineup designed to dominate possession. It is most effective when facing teams that sit deep and need to be pushed back through constant pressure.
