FC Utrecht relies on a high pressing and vertical identity built around a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the middle of the pitch and squeeze the opposition in their own half. By using a high number of players in the central areas, the team looks to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly.

In goal, the goalkeeper acts as the first line of defense, while the back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders. Manu/Fede and Willem operate as the two center backs, often stepping up to engage attackers early. This high line requires them to be alert to any long balls played over the top. Because there are only two dedicated defenders, the unit must hold a compact shape to prevent the opposition from playing through the center.

The midfield is the engine of FC Utrecht, utilizing a five man line that fills the pitch. Mer/Sjors works in the center to shield the defense and recycle possession. Beside them, Timo/Maart and Quim/Maart provide the drive to move the ball forward, with one often acting as a carrier to break the lines. On the flanks of this midfield block, Cedric/Gilles and Dali/Gilles occupy the half spaces. They are tasked to pull wide to stretch the defense or cut inside to create numbers in the attacking third, linking the defensive block to the front three.

The attacking unit uses three players across the front to pin the opposition back. Sjors plays as the central striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or run in behind the defense. Evert on the right and Maxie on the left operate as wide attackers who can either stay wide to receive long balls or move into central positions to combine in tight spaces. This front three presses from the front to force a long ball from the opponent, creating chances for the midfield to win the second ball.

One major advantage for FC Utrecht is the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. The wide midfielders like Dali/Gilles and Cedric/Gilles can also create wide overloads when they push forward. Additionally, the high number of players in the middle allows the team to press in coordinated waves, making it hard for the opposition to find space to breathe.

This 2-5-3 formation is designed for a team that wants to dominate the ball and play with high intensity. It is best suited for matches against opponents that sit deep and struggle to handle constant pressure in the middle third.
