Ajax focuses on controlling the ball through short passing and high technical proficiency in a 4-5-1. This formation aims to dominate the center of the pitch and create attacking waves while maintaining a central presence to manage the tempo. The Ajax lineup works to squeeze the space in the middle to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

Van der Sar starts from the back to help play out from the back. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four with Suurbier as the right back and Krol acting as the left back. Blind and Frank de Boer form the central pairing, where Frank de Boer acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks. These defenders must hold the line and step up to catch opponents offside or drop back to cover when the team pushes high up the pitch.

A five man midfield provides the engine for this system. Rijkaard sits in a deep role to shield the defence and win the second ball, while Neskeens works alongside him to protect the central area. Cruyff operates in a more advanced role to drive forward with the ball and create chances, supported by Keizer and Bergkamp in the half spaces. This group connects the defence to the attack by recycling possession and moving the ball through the thirds to find the front line.

The attacking phase relies on a lone striker, Van Basten, who is a clinical finisher known for his movement and aerial strength. He acts as a focal point to hold up the ball and wait for the midfielders to arrive. Cruyff, Keizer, and Bergkamp push forward to support him, often making runs into the box or cutting inside to create overloads. The wingers or wide midfielders must pull wide to stretch the defence and provide options for crosses or cutbacks from the byline.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield to control the rhythm of the game. The ability to combine in tight spaces allows the team to bypass a low block through quick passing. Ajax also benefits from the speed of transition when the midfield wins the ball high up the pitch and immediately finds Van Basten in behind the opposition defence.

The 4-5-1 lineup focuses on central dominance and technical ball control. It is best suited for games against teams that sit deep and require patient movement to break down a compact defensive block.
