Starting Lineup

GK · DLD · DC · DC · DLI · MED · MED · DEL/VOL · EXT/VOL · EXT/VOL · DEL

Puebla aims to maintain a compact and hard to break down identity using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and wait for the right moment to strike, relying on defensive solidity and quick transitions to punish opponents. The goal is to squeeze the space between the lines and remain difficult to play through in the central areas.

The GK guards the goal within a flat back four that stays organized to prevent gaps. The DLD and DLI act as full backs, tasked with tracking wide runners and providing cover when the team faces heavy pressure. In the middle, the RCB and LCB focus on defending zonally and winning the second ball. They must stay close together to ensure the defensive unit remains tight and protects the central zone against a single striker.

The midfield works as a five man block to control the center of the pitch. The MED at LDM and the MED at RDM form a double pivot to shield the defence and break up play. A DEL/VOL sits in the center as a carrier to connect the back line to the rest of the team. On the flanks, the EXT/VOL at LAM and the EXT/VOL at RAM provide width and are expected to track back to support the full backs. This midfield group must move in unison to close down passing lanes and force the opposition wide.

In the attacking phase, the DEL acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball and wait for support. The attack relies on the EXT/VOL players to push forward and support the striker in transition. Rather than staying static, the forwards work to press the opposition back line to win the ball high up the pitch. The team looks to use the wide players to stretch the defence and deliver balls into the box for the DEL to attack.

One major strength of this Puebla lineup is the ability to stay compact when defending in a mid-block. By crowding the middle, the team makes it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines. Another advantage is the speed of transition, as the team can quickly move the ball from the double pivot to the wide players to hit in behind on the transition.

This 4-5-1 formation is a disciplined way to control games through defensive stability. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession where Puebla can sit deep and counter at pace.
