FC Utrecht aims to dominate the pitch through a high press and direct verticality. This 2-5-3 formation relies on overwhelming the opponent in the middle and forward areas to win the ball back high up the pitch. The lineup is built to play a high tempo game that forces mistakes in the opposition half.

In goal, GK protects the net as the last line of defense. The back line consists of a back two with Manu/Fede and Willem acting as central defenders. They play a very high line to squeeze the space and keep the team compact. Manu/Fede and Willem must be ready to step up to catch opponents offside or cover ground if the opponent breaks the lines. Since there are only two defenders, they often hold the line to prevent long balls from bypassing the midfield.

The midfield is the engine of this FC Utrecht lineup, using five players to control the center. Mer/Sjors sits in the middle to shield the defense and recycle possession. To the left and right, Timo/Maart and Quim/Maart act as central midfielders who drive forward with the ball and cover the wide areas. Dali/Gilles and Cedric/Gilles act as two tens in the half-spaces. Dali/Gilles and Cedric/Gilles push into advanced positions to create numbers in the final third, while also helping to press in a mid-block to win the ball back.

The front line uses three attackers to stretch the defense. Sjors acts as a central striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Maxie plays on the left as an inverted winger to cut inside and find space, while Evert operates on the right to provide width and deliver crosses. These attackers work to pull wide and stretch the defense, creating gaps for Sjors to exploit. The front three work to press the opposition back line from the front, looking to win the ball back and break quickly.

The main advantage of this formation is the heavy numerical superiority in the midfield. Having five players in the middle allows the team to compress the midfield and win the second ball frequently. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, as the front three and the attacking midfielders can trigger a press together. This lineup makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back without making a mistake.

This 2-5-3 formation is a brave, high intensity system designed to suffocate the opponent. It is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and force the opposition into errors.
