Starting Lineup

Ley (9) · Ezekiel · Osihmeh · Sanito · Donates/Great · Kante · Eddy · Julius · Danny · Archibobo · Wisdom

Chelsea focuses on defensive solidity and quick transitions through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and strike effectively when the opposition leaves space behind. By maintaining a deep defensive block, the team can absorb heavy attacks before moving the ball forward rapidly to exploit gaps.

Wisdom sits between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back five consists of Kante, Julius, and Danny in the central positions, while Eddy and Archibobo act as wing backs. Kante serves as a central defender to provide strength, with Julius and Danny working as ball playing defenders to initiate play. Eddy and Archibobo are tasked to push high up the pitch to provide width, while the central three stay narrow to protect the penalty area and win the second ball.

The midfield functions as a double pivot with Sanito and Donates/Great occupying the central spaces. Sanito works to shield the defense and recycle possession, while Donates/Great is the carrier who drives forward with the ball to link the lines. These two players must work together to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the center. Their primary job is to win the ball and immediately look to find the attackers.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Ley acts as the lone striker and a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line. Ezekiel plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create chances, while Osihmeh operates on the right to provide width or drift into half spaces. This front three works to pin the last defender and create runs in behind through quick combinations.

One major advantage for Chelsea is the ability to create wide overloads when Eddy and Archibobo push forward to overlap the wingers. The formation also provides great compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to find space in the middle. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can go direct to Ley or Ezekiel the moment they win possession in the middle third.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a hard block that is difficult to break down. It is best suited for matches against dominant teams where Chelsea needs to sit deep and hit on the break.
