Chelsea Football Formation
Starting Lineup
R. LUKAKU · M. SALAH · E. HAZARD · N. KANTE · C. FABREGAS · K. DE BRUYNE · D. ALVES · A. RUDIGER · T. SILVA · D. LUIZ · T. CURTOISChelsea looks to dominate through high pressing and quick vertical transitions in this 4-3-3. The lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately look to exploit space behind the opposition defense. By staying aggressive, Chelsea creates a constant threat through rapid changes in possession.
T. Curtois guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back line operates as a flat back four, with T. Silva acting as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. Beside him, D. Luiz provides cover and uses his aerial strength to win headers during defensive transitions. A. Rudiger plays as a left back and is tasked to step up to squeeze the space, while D. Alves works on the right as an attacking full back to provide width. This unit functions to maintain a high line and force the opposition into long balls.
The midfield works as a three man midfield with a carrier and a creative engine. N. Kante sits in the center to press aggressively and win the ball high up the pitch, often covering huge amounts of ground to intercept passes. To his left, C. Fabregas acts as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and find the feet of the attackers. K. De Bruyne plays in the advanced role, acting as an attacking ten behind the striker to deliver through balls and arrive late into the box. These players link the defense to the attack by driving forward with the ball.
In the attacking third, the team uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. E. Hazard operates as an inverted winger on the left, looking to cut inside and create chances. On the right, M. Salah also plays as an inverted winger, using his pace and dribbling style to threaten the far post. R. Lukaku leads the line as a pressing centre forward and a target man to hold up the ball. The forwards press the opposition back line in pairs to trigger a press and create runs in behind.
This formation offers several tactical advantages. The combination of N. Kante and K. De Bruyne provides the ability to press high in coordinated waves while also being able to break the line with a single pass. There is a significant threat of isolating wide players in one on one situations when M. Salah or E. Hazard receive the ball in space. Furthermore, the presence of R. Lukaku allows the team to switch play and hit in behind on the transition.
Chelsea uses this setup to suffocate opponents through ball retention and high intensity. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line or struggle to move the ball through the midfield.
