Osasuna relies on a direct and aggressive identity to challenge opponents. They primarily operate with a 5-2-3 formation that focuses on being defensively solid while ready to counter at pace. This lineup is built to play a style where the team sits deep in a low block and looks to hit teams on the transition with verticality.

Sergio Herrera plays behind a back five to protect the goal. Boyomo and Herrando act as the central defenders, with Boyomo using his aerial strength to win the header in duels. Catena sits in the middle of the trio to cover the space between the others and help defend zonally. Iker Benito and Bretones act as attacking wing backs who need to provide width and overlap the winger when the team has the ball. They must also track back quickly to prevent being caught out on the break.

The midfield is controlled by a double pivot of Torró and Moncayola. Both players work to shield the defense and win the second ball. Torró is tasked to carry the ball forward and recycle possession when the team moves into higher areas. Moncayola works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping deep to receive the ball from the defenders. They must squeeze the space between the lines to ensure the opponent cannot play through the lines easily.

In the attacking phase, Osasuna uses a lone striker in Budimir who functions as a target man. Budimir uses his aerial strength to hold up the ball and find the feet of teammates in support. Moi Gómez and Víctor M. operate as wide attackers to stretch the defense. Moi Gómez often looks to cut inside to find space, while Víctor M. spreads wide to deliver early crosses. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

One major tactical strength of this formation is the compactness when defending in a mid-block or low block. This makes it very difficult for the opposition to find space between the lines. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Iker Benito and Bretones. This allows the team to switch play quickly and whip it in toward the penalty area.

The 5-2-3 formation provides Osasuna with a very sturdy defensive foundation. This lineup is perfectly suited for facing teams that dominate possession and rely on heavy ball movement.
