Starting Lineup

Wöber · Sugawara · Friedl · Stark · Lynen · Stage · Boniface · Grüll · Puertas · Schmid · Hein

Werder Bremen aims to play a very vertical style of football using a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to catch opponents off guard by moving the ball quickly toward the goal. The intention is to overwhelm the opposition with numbers in the final third and use high energy to recover the ball.

Hein stays between the posts to organize the defensive line. The defense consists of a narrow back two with Friedl and Stark acting as the central defenders. Friedl and Stark must stay compact to prevent direct runs while covering the space behind the midfield. This small defensive unit relies on strong communication to handle crosses and single runners.

In the middle of the pitch, the team operates with a double pivot of Wöber and Sugawara. Wöber and Sugawara work to shield the back two and win the second ball when possession is lost. Ahead of them, Lynen and Stage act as two attacking tens in the half spaces. Lynen and Stage connect the defensive line to the attack, using their ability to carry the ball forward and finding pockets of space between the opponent's midfield and defense.

The attacking unit is extremely aggressive with four players positioned high up the pitch. Grüll and Schmid operate as wide wingers, with Grüll looking to cut inside and Schmid pulling wide to stretch the defense. In the center, Puertas and Boniface work as a striking partnership. Boniface uses his physical presence to hold up the ball, while Puertas looks for runs in behind to exploit gaps. This front four can press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

Werder Bremen gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the attacking third. By committing so many players forward, the team can create quick combinations to split the defense with through balls. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can move from a defensive block to a full attack in a matter of seconds.

This 2-4-4 formation is a high risk, high reward system focused on heavy offensive pressure. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to chase a result against a side that sits deep.
