Starting Lineup

SK Rapid aims to play a direct and high tempo game with a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to stretch the opposition and attack with heavy numbers in the final third. By spreading the play wide and using a high line, the team looks to overwhelm the defense through quick transitions and constant pressure.

Zeman plays in goal to organize the back line. The defensive unit works as a flat back four where Weber acts as the right back and Schottel plays as the left back. Happel and Merkel sit as the central defenders, with Happel acting as a ball playing defender to start attacks from the back. Merkel focuses on winning the header and covering the space behind as the team pushes up. The defenders work together to keep a high line and squeeze the space between the lines to prevent the opponent from playing through the middle.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide stability. Smistik and Körner occupy the central areas to shield the defense and win the second ball. Smistik often drives forward with the ball to carry it into the middle third, while Körner works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This duo must work hard to cover the large gaps left behind when the team commits bodies forward. They are responsible for recycling possession and making sure the transition from defense to attack remains fast.

An aggressive front line uses two central forwards and two wide attackers. Panenka and Hannapi play as inverted wingers who cut inside to create chances or occupy the half spaces. Herzog and Binder act as a strike partnership, with one player looking to hold up the ball and the other looking to make runs in behind. This combination allows SK Rapid to attack in combinations through the center or by using the width provided by the wingers. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and disrupt the opposition build up.

This formation offers significant attacking advantages through its heavy presence in the final third. The team creates wide overloads when the wingers and full backs combine, often leaving the opposition defense stretched. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the four attackers can immediately hunt the ball and exploit space the moment it is won. This setup creates many one on one situations for Hannapi and Panenka against the full backs.
