Blackburn Football Formation
Starting Lineup
WALTON · WALTERS · PICKERING · HOLGATE (VC) · WHARTON · TRAVIS (C) · CHARLES · DOLAN · HAMILTON · KARETSAS · BALLARDBlackburn plays a high tempo, vertical style of football using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to attack with numbers and win the ball back quickly in the opposition half. The goal is to overwhelm the opponent by committing multiple players to the attacking phase and playing with extreme aggression to create constant pressure.
Walton stays between the posts to lead the defensive unit. The back four operates as a flat back four, with Walters and Pickering acting as the wide defenders. Walters and Pickering must be prepared to overlap the winger to provide width during the attack. Holgate and Wharton form the central pairing, where they must be ready to cover for each other and win the header when crosses come in. They work to hold the line and ensure they do not get split by a through ball.
Charles and Travis operate as a double pivot in the middle of the park. Their main job is to shield the defense and win the second ball constantly. Charles tries to connect the defensive and attacking lines by playing short from the back, while Travis works to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. Because there are only two players in this zone, they must stay disciplined to avoid leaving the center of the pitch open to counter attacks.
The attacking front is very wide with Hamilton and Dolan acting as wingers who look to cut inside. Hamilton and Dolan stretch the defense by staying wide before they pull inside to create space. Karetsas and Ballard lead the line as a two-man striking partnership. Karetsas will try to make runs in behind the defense, while Ballard works to hold up the ball and lay it off to teammates. This front four forces the opposition to defend deep and creates many chances through quick combinations.
A major advantage for Blackburn is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. With four attackers, the team can squeeze the space and force a long ball from the opposition. Another strength is the speed of transition, allowing the team to hit in behind on the transition very quickly once the ball is won. This formation allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations if the opposition fails to track back.
This 4-2-4 formation is a high pressure system designed to dominate the final third. It is best used when facing teams that try to play out from the back or when Blackburn needs to hunt for goals through direct play.
