The midfield is built around a double pivot consisting of Maxi Eggestein and Patrick Osterhage. These two players work to protect the center of the pitch and shield the defense. Eggestein and Osterhage are tasked to win the second ball and connect the defensive unit to the front four. They must be ready to recycle possession or immediately look to find the attackers. When the team loses the ball, they work to press in a mid-block to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

In the attacking phase, Freiburg employs four players across the front. Vincenzo Grifo plays as an inverted winger on the left and Jan-Niklas Beste occupies the right wing. They look to cut inside and create chances or deliver crosses into the box. The central roles are filled by Johan Manzambi and Junior Adamu.
