River aims to control the tempo and play a vertical style of football through a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup focuses on maintaining a compact unit to win the ball back and strike quickly through the central areas. The goal for River is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition before playing through the lines to reach the attackers.

J. Ledesma guards the goal while the defensive unit stays compact. The back four consists of G. Montiel © at right back and M. Acuña at left back, both of whom are tasked to overlap the wingers when the team has possession. In the middle, L. Martínez Q. and A. Barboza operate as a central pair, with Martínez Q. providing cover while Barboza uses his strength to win the second ball. They work together to hold a high line and squeeze the space between the defense and the midfield.

The midfield operates in two lines of four to maintain balance. G. Galoppo and M. Arambarri act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Arambarri sits deeper to deny the turn of attacking midfielders, while Galoppo drives forward to connect the defensive and attacking lines. On the flanks, J. Quintero and L. Cepeda play as wide midfielders who need to track back to help the full backs and then push up to support the attack.

Up front, the team utilizes two forwards in a partnership. M. Salas leads the line as the primary striker, often looking to run in behind the defense. R. Borré operates as a second striker who drops into the hole to link up play with the midfield. This movement creates space for the wide players to cut inside and allows Salas to find himself in one on one situations. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to achieve compactness when defending in a mid-block. By keeping the lines close together, the players can easily intercept passes and transition quickly. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads, as the full backs push up to support Quintero and Cepeda. This creates more options to cross or play a short pass into the box.

This 4-4-2 formation is built for a team that wants to balance defensive stability with direct attacking movements. It is best suited for matches against opponents who play a high line and can be caught out on the transition.
