PSV Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Pepi · Man · Til · Wanner · Saibari · Dest · Schouten · Veerman · Mauro Jr · Flamingo · KovarPSV plays a highly aggressive brand of football built around a 2-5-3 formation. The team aims to control the pitch through extreme verticality and heavy pressure in the final third. This lineup is designed to suffocate opponents by using a massive numbers advantage in the middle and attacking zones.
Kovar sits between the posts to oversee the defense. The back line consists of a narrow two man unit with Schouten and Flamingo acting as the central defenders. Schouten and Flamingo must be ready to step up and engage attackers early to prevent them from turning. Because there are only two defenders, they must stay tight and cover for each other to prevent any long balls from breaking the line. They focus on winning the ball and playing short from the back to start the next phase of play.
The midfield is a crowded five man block that controls the center of the pitch. Dest plays as a right central midfielder to provide energy, while Mauro Jr works alongside him to shield the two defenders. Veerman operates in the right central midfield role to distribute the ball with his wide passing range. Saibari joins the central group to help recycle possession and press in a mid-block. Wanner plays in the attacking midfield role to link the midfield to the front line, acting as the main creator to find the players making runs in behind.
The attack uses three players across the front to stretch the opposition. Til plays as a left winger to provide width, while Man stays wide on the right to isolate defenders one on one. Pepi acts as the lone striker and pressing centre forward to pin the last defender. This front three works to press the opposition back line immediately upon losing the ball. PSV looks to attack in combinations through the middle, using Wanner to lay it off for Til or Man to run into space.
One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the midfield, which allows PSV to dominate the ball and squeeze the space in the center. The team can also create wide overloads when the midfielders push up to support the wingers. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to build out from the back.
This aggressive 2-5-3 lineup is built to dominate possession and pin opponents into their own half. It is best suited for matches where PSV can exploit a high defensive line and use their midfield density to win the second ball.
