Peñarol aims to play a high press and direct style of football using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup focuses on verticality and quick transitions to catch the opposition off guard. By utilizing a heavy presence in the middle and wide areas, the team looks to win the ball back high up the pitch and move it forward with speed.

G. Buffon stays between the posts to organize the defense. The back line works as a narrow defensive block with three central defenders. F. Redondo sits in the middle of this group to act as a ball playing defender. A. Nesta and F. de Boer provide strength and cover, with Nesta often tasked to mark the opponent's main threat. The wing backs, G. Zambrotta and P. Maldini (C), are tasked to provide width. P. Maldini (C) acts as a left wing back to cover the flank while G. Zambrotta pushes up to overlap the midfield. The whole unit stays compact to deny any space between the lines.

The midfield operates as a three-man midfield with a carrier. Z. Zidane plays as the attacking ten behind the strikers, using his famous vision and ball control to create chances. In front of him, P. Scholes and S. Effenberg control the tempo. P. Scholes works to recycle possession and find teammates with his passing range, while S. Effenberg provides the grit to win the second ball and drive forward with the ball. This trio connects the defense to the attack by moving the ball quickly through the thirds.

Peñarol employs two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. R. Baggio plays as a second striker in the hole, often dropping deep to link up play between the lines. G. Batistuta operates as a pressing centre-forward, using his aerial strength and finishing to pin the last defender. The attack relies on quick combinations and runs in behind the defense. When the ball moves wide, the wing backs provide crosses to find the heads of the strikers or hit in behind on the transition.

One major advantage for Peñarol is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, forcing the opposition into mistakes. The presence of Z. Zidane in the hole creates numerical superiority in the central areas during the build up. Additionally, the team can shift between a back five and a back three very effectively depending on whether the wing backs push up or sit deep.

This 5-3-2 formation provides a solid base for counter attacking football. It is best suited for games against teams that play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
