Up front, the team relies on a potent three-man attack. Eusébio plays as a central striker who can hold up the ball and wait for teammates to arrive. Figo operates on the right as an inverted winger who wants to cut inside and find space in the half-spaces. Cristiano Ronaldo stays wide on the left to stretch the defence before making runs in behind. The wing backs, João Pinto and Hilario, overlap the wingers to deliver crosses into the box.

One major advantage for Portugal is the ability to create wide overloads. By having João Pinto and Hilario push high, they can double up on opposition full backs. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can hit in behind on the transition once Deco or Ruí Costa wins possession. This formation forces the opposition to stay narrow, which opens more space for the wingers.
