Starting Lineup

Brey · Battaglia · Paredes · Costa · Gorosito · Di Lollo · Pellegrino · Payal · Dalmasso · Merentiel · Zenón

Boca aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and hit teams on the transition using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to play with high intensity and directness to exploit space behind the opposition back line. The lineup focuses on heavy pressure and getting numbers forward to overwhelm the defense in a vertical manner.

Brey guards the goal as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four with Costa on the left and Gorosito on the right. Pellegrino and Di Lollo act as the central defenders, where Di Lollo provides aerial strength and Pellegrino works to cover the space when the line steps up. The unit holds a high line to squeeze the space and keep the team compact, relying on the defenders to intercept long balls and clear the lines when under pressure.

The midfield is composed of a double pivot consisting of Battaglia and Paredes. Paredes acts as the deep lying playmaker, using his passing range to find attackers and switch play quickly. Battaglia works to shield the defense and connects the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward. Together, they aim to win the second ball and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle, ensuring the team can quickly move from a defensive block to an attacking stance.

The attack uses two forwards in a partnership with Payal and Merentiel leading the line. Merentiel acts as a pressing centre forward to force mistakes, while Payal works to link up play between the lines. Dalmasso and Zenón play as wide wingers who hug the touchline to stretch the defence. This creates space for the central attackers to make runs in behind or for the wingers to cut inside and find the feet of the striker. The forwards press from the front to deny the opposition time on the ball.

This formation offers great speed of transition and wide overloads when the full backs push forward. Boca can use the distance between the midfield and the front four to isolate wide players in one on one situations. The ability to press in coordinated waves creates high turnover opportunities near the opponent goal.

The 4-2-4 formation is built for heavy attacking pressure and rapid counter attacks. It is best suited for games against teams that sit deep and struggle to deal with high intensity pressing and quick vertical passing.
