Starting Lineup

Focusing on a compact and defensive identity, QPR utilizes a 5-4-1 formation designed to absorb pressure and strike on the break. This lineup is built to sit deep and wait for the right moment to exploit spaces left by the opposition. The goal is to keep the defensive block extremely tight while ensuring the team remains ready to transition instantly when the ball is won.

Maignan operates between the posts to command the area and organize the back line. The defensive unit consists of a back five where Minjae and Tchouaméni act as central defenders to win headers and clear the lines. Araujo sits on the right side of the central trio to provide cover and strength. On the flanks, Bastoni and Szoboszlai act as attacking wing backs tasked with providing width and tracking back to defend the wide areas. This defensive block ensures the team is difficult to break down through the middle.

The midfield works as a double pivot with Rodri and Valverde sitting in front of the defense. Rodri acts as the deep lying playmaker to recycle possession, while Valverde uses his energy to drive forward with the ball and cover ground. Ahead of them, Vincius and Saka operate in the half spaces as attacking midfielders. Vincius uses his dribbling style to beat players, while Saka looks to create chances and deliver crosses from the right. This midfield unit connects the defense to the attack by moving the ball quickly through the lines.

QPR relies on a lone striker in Erling Haaland to lead the line. Haaland acts as a pressing centre forward to disrupt the opposition build up and then holds up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the attack. When the team wins the ball, the attack relies on quick transitions where Saka and Vincius push high to support the striker. The wing backs, Szoboszlai and Bastoni, overlap the midfielders to stretch the defense and create crossing opportunities from the byline.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to maintain compactness when defending deep in a low block. The double pivot of Rodri and Valverde allows the team to protect the center of the pitch and deny the opponent time on the ball. Additionally, the team can create wide overloads when the wing backs push up to join the attacking midfielders. This makes QPR very dangerous in transition, especially when using the pace of the wide players.
