Starting Lineup
Bedico (Atlético) · Cortez (Real Sociedad) · Salvallon (Real Sociedad) · Lutero (Real Sociedad) · Silao (Real Sociedad) · Huesca (Real Sociedad) · Nepomuceno (Real Sociedad) · Villanueva (Real Sociedad) · Tayong (Real Sociedad) · Solinap (Real Sociedad) · Piao (Barcelona)This lineup relies on a direct and vertical style of play through a 4-4-2 formation. The team seeks to win the second ball and strike quickly once possession is regained. By utilizing two banks of four, the team can remain compact while looking to hit the opposition in transition.
Bedico acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit operates with a flat back four where Lutero and Solinap hold the wide positions. Lutero is expected to push up to support the wingers, while Solinap provides width on the left. In the center, Cortez and Salvallon defend the zone, with Cortez often acting to cover space behind the full backs. This back four works together to squeeze the space between the lines and maintain a cohesive block.
The midfield is organized in two lines of two, creating a traditional four man midfield. Tayong and Piao occupy the central roles, working to shield the defense and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch. Tayong looks to drive forward with the ball to link play, while Piao stays deeper to recycle possession. On the flanks, Villanueva and Huesca provide the width. Both Villanueva and Huesca are tasked to track back and help the full backs when defending, but they must also carry the ball forward to stretch the defense during attacks.
In the attacking third, the team uses two forwards in a partnership. Silao and Nepomuceno operate as the front two, often looking to run in behind the opposition defensive line. Silao plays as the left striker to link play, while Nepomuceno works as a presence to hold up the ball and lay it off to oncoming runners. The movement of these two is designed to create space for late runs from the midfield or to isolate defenders in one on one situations.
This formation offers significant advantages in defensive compactness and speed of transition. The team can shift easily between a mid-block and a high press to disrupt the opponent. By utilizing the width of Villanueva and Huesca, the team can create overloads on the flanks to help the strikers. The proximity of the two banks of four makes it difficult for opponents to play through the center.
This 4-4-2 setup is built for teams that want to remain difficult to break down while exploiting space on the counter. It is best suited for matches against possession heavy opponents where the team can sit deep and hit in behind on the transition.
