Católica) · Domingos (Da Guia) (Flamengo) · Salomón (José) (Racing Club) · Sosa (Carlos) (Boca) · Varela (Obdulio) (Peñarol) · Gambetta (Schúbert) (Nacional) · Moreno ("Charro") (River) · Pedernera (Adolfo) (River) · Loustau (Felix) (River) · Bican (Josef) (Slavia Praha) · Matthews (Stanley) (Blackpool)The team relies on a heavy high press and rapid transitions, utilizing a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the pitch and catch opponents in moments of turnover. By playing with high intensity, the side aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike before the opposition can settle.
Livingstone starts between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit operates as a back five, with Varela sitting centrally to hold the line and act as a dominant presence in the air. To his sides, Salomón and Domingos operate as wide centre-backs who can cover the space when the wing backs push forward. Gambetta and Sosa act as attacking wing backs, providing the necessary width. Gambetta is expected to overlap the winger, while Sosa pushes high to stretch the defence. This unit maintains a compact shape to deny space between the lines.
In the middle of the pitch, the team employs a double pivot to control the central area. Bican and Moreno occupy the two central midfield roles, working to connect the defence to the attack. Bican often works to shield the defence and intercept passes, while Moreno is tasked to carry the ball forward into the half-spaces. The duo must work hard to compress the midfield and ensure they are not bypassed during transitions. They provide the engine that allows the team to transition from a mid-block to an attacking wave.
The attacking front line consists of three players designed to pin the last defender. Pedernera leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, looking to find the feet of the striker and hold up the ball. On the flanks, Loustau and Matthews act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to create space in the middle. Loustau looks to cut inside to create goal threats, while Matthews aims to get to the byline and deliver early crosses. This front three works in unison to press the opposition back line and create runs in behind.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads from the overlapping wing backs. When Gambetta and Sosa push up, they force the opposition to pull wide, creating gaps in the center. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger a press that the midfield can then support. This creates a heavy presence in the final third that is difficult to play through.
This 5-2-3 formation focuses on defensive solidity through a back five combined with aggressive attacking width. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back or leave space behind their full backs.
