Deportivo focuses on being defensively solid and looking to exploit spaces on the break using a 5-4-1. This formation is built to sit deep and deny the opposition room to operate in the final third. By clogging the middle, the team relies on a low block to frustrate opponents before launching quick vertical passes forward.

Osazuwa keeps goal as the last line of defense. In front of him, the back line operates as a compact unit of five. Ochoa and Akintunde Alani act as the central defenders, with Ochoa providing aerial strength and Akintunde Alani covering the space behind. Martínez sits on the left side of that central trio to maintain balance. Marchal works the right wing as a wing back, while Arturo covers the left flank. Both Marchal and Arturo must track back deep to form a back five when the team is out of possession, but they are also tasked to push up the pitch to provide width when the ball is won.

The midfield works in a flat line of four to block passing lanes. Cedillo and Barrachina form a central pair to shield the defense and break up play. Cedillo looks to drive forward when the opportunity arises, while Barrachina stays closer to the center to intercept passes. On the flanks, Pezzolesi and Sarasketa operate as wide midfielders. They must track back to help the wing backs and can switch play to find the wide areas once the ball is recovered. This midfield unit connects the defensive line to the lone striker through quick transitions.

Gómez leads the line as a lone striker. He is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support from the midfield. The attacking play relies on Gómez to make runs into the channels or stay central to receive long balls. When the team loses possession, Gómez must press the opposition defenders to prevent them from playing out easily. The goal is to create chances through crosses from the wide areas or by playing balls directly into the path of Gómez.

Deportivo gains a significant advantage through their extreme compactness when defending in a low block. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines. The formation also offers great speed of transition, as the team can move from a deep defensive stance to an attacking one in seconds. By using Marchal and Arturo to provide width, the team can create overloads on the flanks during counters.

This 5-4-1 formation is designed to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for games against dominant teams where Deportivo needs to protect the goal and play for a single decisive moment.
