Bologna Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Sifat · Fayshal · Hasem · Rifat/Tanvir/Shemol · Omor/Sohan · Mihad · Eliyas/Rupom · Akash · Kawsar · Asad/Siyam · TarekBologna seeks to remain defensively solid and compact through a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep, absorb pressure, and strike quickly when the opposition leaves space behind. The team focuses on closing down passing lanes and maintaining a low block to frustrate more expansive sides.
Asad/Siyam guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back line consists of three central defenders with Mihad leading the group, flanked by Kawsar on the left and Eliyas/Rupom on the right. These three must work to mark attackers and win headers in the box. Tarek and Akash operate as wing backs on either side. Tarek must push up to provide width on the right, while Akash covers the left flank to help the defense and track back when possession is lost. This unit shifts together to prevent gaps from appearing between the defenders.
The midfield unit functions as a flat four to shield the back five. Hasem and Fayshal sit in the center to hold the middle, block through balls, and intercept passes before they reach the defense. They act as the connection point between the deep defenders and the lone forward. On the flanks, Rifat/Tanvir/Shemol and Omor/Sohan occupy the wide areas to track the opposing full backs. These midfielders must shift horizontally to ensure the middle remains tight and difficult to penetrate.
Bologna utilizes a lone striker, Sifat, to lead the attack. Because the midfield is so deep, Sifat must hold up the ball and wait for support to arrive. The attacking structure relies on the wing backs, Tarek and Akash, to provide the primary width through crosses from deep. Sifat works to press the opposition defenders to force mistakes, creating space for the midfield to break the line with direct passes.
A major advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending in a low block. By keeping the distances between the five defenders and four midfielders small, Bologna makes it very hard for opponents to find space between the lines. Another strength is the ability to use the wing backs for quick transitions. When the team wins the ball, Tarek and Akash can immediately push up to stretch the opposition.
This 5-4-1 formation is a disciplined setup designed for teams that want to control space and defend deep. It is best suited for matches against high possession teams where Bologna can exploit them on the counter attack.
