Milan focuses on controlling the central areas and hitting teams quickly through a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to play with a strong verticality, using wide players to stretch the pitch while keeping the middle compact. By utilizing five players in the middle, the team aims to dominate the ball and win it back immediately after losing it.

M. MAIGNAN acts as the first line of defense, often playing a wide role to sweep up long balls. The back three consists of GABBIA, TOMORI, and PAVLOVIĆ, who work as a cohesive unit to cover space. TOMORI uses his recovery speed to step up and intercept runs, while PAVLOVIĆ and GABBIA provide aerial strength and stability. This back three stays deep when defending a low block but steps up to compress the pitch during a high press.

The midfield functions as a central engine to control the tempo of the game. MODRIĆ sits in the single pivot role, using his exceptional passing range and vision to break the line and connect the defense to the attack. RABIOT and B. SILVA operate as the two central midfielders, with RABIOT providing energy to cover ground and B. SILVA helping to drive the ball forward through the middle. ESTUPIÑAN and SAELEMAEKERS act as the wide midfielders, tasked with providing width and tracking back to support the defenders.

In the attacking third, Milan utilizes two forwards to create constant movement. RAFA LEÁO operates on the left side of the duo, using his dribbling style and explosive pace to cut inside and threaten the goal. C. PULISIC plays on the right, often looking to find space between the lines or drift wide to create crossing opportunities. The duo works to press the opposition defenders, forcing turnovers high up the pitch to feed the attacking midfielders.

A major strength of this Milan formation is the numerical superiority it creates in the center of the pitch. With MODRIĆ, RABIOT, and B. SILVA, the team can easily outnumber opponents who play a two man midfield. The team also benefits from wide overloads when ESTUPIÑAN and SAELEMAEKERS push forward to join the attack. This creates constant pressure on the opposition full backs and allows the team to switch play quickly to the flanks.

This 3-5-2 formation provides a balanced way to control the middle while remaining dangerous on the break. It is best suited for games where the opponent plays a narrow midfield and can be exploited through wide areas.
