Starting Lineup

A preference for high pressing and verticality defines SK Rapid, who operate within a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the pitch by squeezing the space between the lines and forcing turnovers in the opposition half. The team looks to win the ball back quickly to launch immediate attacks before the opponent can settle into a defensive block.

Hedl sits between the posts to organize the defensive unit. Because there are only two central defenders, Raux Yao and Horn, the team often employs a very high line to compress the pitch. These two must be ready to cover large spaces behind them if the press is bypassed. The wide midfielders must drop back to create a temporary back five when the opponent has possession, ensuring Raux Yao and Horn are not left isolated in wide areas.

The midfield is a dense block designed to control the central zones through a combination of a double pivot and more advanced roles. J. Auer and Bolla act as the pivot, where J. Auer holds his position to protect the central defenders while Bolla looks to break the line with forward runs. Seidl and Amane operate in the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack, providing passing options to switch play. Gulliksen operates as the attacking midfielder, finding pockets of space between the opponent midfield and defense to create chances.

In the attacking third, SK Rapid utilizes three forwards to stretch the opposition. Antiste leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and pin the defenders. On the flanks, Dahl and Wurmbrand act as wide attackers who can cut inside to shoot or stay wide to provide width. This trio maintains a high position to support the press, ensuring that the midfield can push up without leaving too much ground to cover.

This formation offers significant advantages in central congestion and winning the ball high up the pitch. By using five midfielders, SK Rapid can create numerical superiority in the middle of the park to outnumber many standard lineups. The presence of Gulliksen, Seidl, and Amane allows the team to overload the zones just ahead of the defense, making it difficult for opponents to mark every runner. The high press from Antiste, Dahl, and Wurmbrand creates waves of pressure that can force errors in the buildup phase.
