Napoli Football Formation
Starting Lineup
MERET · GUTIERREZ · BUONGIORNO · BEUKEMA · DI LORENZO · GAVI · MAINOO · LOBOTKA · McTOMINAY · HOJLUND · LUCCANapoli aims to play a direct and vertical style of football using a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup focuses on quick transitions and pressing to win the ball back high up the pitch. The team looks to move the ball forward rapidly to catch the opposition out of position once they regain control.
Meret stays between the posts to organize the back line. The defense operates as a flat back four with Di Lorenzo acting as a right back who looks to push up and overlap. On the left, Gutierrez provides width as the left back. In the center, Buongiorno and Beukema act as the primary defenders, with Buongiorno providing aerial strength and Beukema covering the space behind when the line steps up. The unit works to stay compact and shift together to close down passing lanes.
The midfield operates in two banks of two to cover the width of the pitch. Lobotka sits in the central area to hold the ball and break the line with his passing range. Next to him, Mainoo works to connect the defense to the attack by driving forward into space. Gavi plays on the left side of the midfield, using his high pressing intensity to disrupt the opponent. McTominy carries the ball on the right, helping the team move from a defensive block into an attacking phase.
Napoli utilizes two forwards to lead the line. Lucca and Hojlund act as the central attacking duo to occupy the opposition center backs. The two forwards press in tandem to force mistakes from the defenders. Hojlund uses his physical presence to hold up the ball, while Lucca looks to make runs into the channels. This pair can either play as a traditional two strikers or one can drop deeper to help the midfield.
This formation offers several tactical advantages. The team can create wide overloads by having McTominy and Gavi push higher to support the wingers and full backs. There is also a high level of compactness when defending in a mid block, making it difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The speed of transition is a major strength, as the midfield can quickly find the two forwards to exploit gaps.
The 4-4-2 lineup provides a balanced way to press and strike on the break. This formation is best suited for games where Napoli wants to exploit a high defensive line or face opponents that struggle with verticality.
