Czechia National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
HORNÍČEK · COUFAL · HRANÁČ · KREJČÍ (c) · JURÁSEK · SADÍLEK · ČERV · KARABEC · PROVOD · ČERNÝ · VYDRACzechia focuses on a compact defensive block and quick vertical transitions using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup aims to control space between the lines and wait for the right moment to strike. By sitting deep, the team makes it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes, setting the stage for a counter attacking style of play.
HORNÍČEK stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back four consists of COUFAL at right back and JURÁSEK at left back, both of whom need to track back quickly when possession is lost. In the center, HRANÁČ and the captain KREJČÍ form the heart of the defense. KREJČÍ provides leadership and aerial strength while HRANÁČ covers the space behind him. This defensive unit works together to maintain a tight block and deny any runs into the box.
A dense midfield line sits in front of the defense to congest the center of the pitch. SADÍLEK and ČERV act as a double pivot to shield the back four and break up play. Ahead of them, ČERNÝ, KARABEC, and PROVOD occupy the central and wide areas to connect the defense to the attack. These players must shift side to side to block passing lanes and press the opposition when they try to play through the middle.
The attack relies on a lone striker, VYDRA, who must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to push up. VYDRA works to press the opposing defenders and create space for late runs from the midfield. There are no traditional wide wingers, so the width comes from the midfielders or the full backs overlapping to provide crosses. The goal is to use the movement of the five midfielders to support the striker in the final third.
One major advantage for Czechia is the ability to create compactness when defending in a low block. The proximity of the five midfielders to the four defenders makes it very hard for opponents to play through the center. Another strength is the speed of transition, where the team can move the ball from the midfield to VYDRA in just a few passes. This allows them to catch teams out of position during a rapid break.
This 4-5-1 formation is built to frustrate dominant teams that want to control the ball. It is best suited for matches where the opponent plays a high line and leaves space behind their defense.
