Pohang aims to play a direct and compact brand of football using a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup relies on defensive discipline and quick transitions to catch opponents off guard. The team looks to control the middle of the pitch through two banks of four, preparing to launch attacks quickly once the ball is won.
The goalkeeper 21 sits behind a flat back four that focuses on maintaining a tight unit. Central defenders 14 and 4 hold the line and cover the space behind the full backs. On the flanks, 2 and 17 provide the width, with 2 acting as the left back and 17 as the right back. These wide players must track back to help the center backs while also being ready to push up the pitch to support the midfield.
The midfield works in two lines of two to control the central areas. 8 and 40 act as the central midfielders, where 8 works to shield the defense and 40 looks to drive forward. To provide width, 7 plays as the left midfielder while 13 operates on the right. This unit connects the defense to the attackers by moving the ball through the lines and ensuring the team stays compact when the opponent has possession.
In the attacking phase, Pohang uses two strikers to lead the line. 11 plays as the left striker and 19 operates as the right striker. These two forwards often work together to hold up the ball or make runs into the channels to pull defenders out of position. The wide players 7 and 13 look to cross the ball into the box, while the strikers press the opposition defenders to win the ball back high up the pitch.
This formation offers several tactical advantages for Pohang. The two banks of four create a very compact block that is hard to break through in the middle. By using 11 and 19 together, the team can create quick vertical passing lanes to break the lines of the opposition. The presence of 7 and 13 allows the team to create wide overloads when the full backs 2 and 17 overlap to join the attack.
This 4-4-2 setup is built to be defensively solid and highly effective on the counter attack. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession, allowing Pohang to sit deep and strike quickly.
