The team operates in a 5-2-3 formation designed to absorb pressure before hitting the opposition in behind. This system relies on a dense defensive block and high energy from the wide players to control the pitch.
In goal, GK stands ready to command the area. The defensive unit utilizes a back five that can shift depending on the ball position. CB and CB form the central core, acting as dominant figures in the air and covering the space behind. DMF sits just ahead of them as a deep lying center back to protect the central zone. The wide defenders, RWB and LWB, act as attacking wing backs to provide width. They are expected to push high to support the attack but must track back quickly to maintain the defensive line.
The midfield relies on a two man unit consisting of LCM and RCM. These players function as a central pairing that must work hard to cover the large spaces. LCM and RCM need to win the second ball and connect the defense to the front line. One player often drops to shield the back five while the other looks to carry the ball forward. They must press aggressively in a mid block to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
The attacking front three consists of SS, CF, and CF. SS operates as a wide forward on the left, while CF and CF occupy the right side and the center. This creates a front line that can press from the front to force a long ball. The CF in the center acts as a focal point to hold up the ball, allowing SS and the other CF to make runs in behind. The goal is to use the width provided by RWB and LWB to stretch the defense and then deliver crosses into the box.
This formation offers several tactical advantages. The use of five defenders provides great compactness when defending deep. The wide wing backs allow for quick wide overloads during transitions. By having three attackers, the team can also pin the last defender and create isolation in one on one situations on the flanks.
This 5-2-3 lineup is built for teams that want to sit deep and strike on the counter. It is particularly effective against opponents that dominate possession but leave space behind their high defensive line.
