RB Salzburg Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Krätzig · Lainer · Rasmussen · Gadou · Ratkov · Vertessen · Kjærgaard · Bidstrup · Kitano · Gourna-Douath · SchlagerRB Salzburg aims to dominate through intense pressing and heavy central congestion in a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup works to suffocate opponents in their own half by flooding the middle of the pitch with bodies. It is a vertical formation built to win the ball high up the pitch and drive quickly toward the goal.
Schlager sits between the posts to organize the defense. The back line consists of a very thin duo with Gadou and Rasmussen acting as the two central defenders. Since there are no wide defenders in this formation, Gadou and Rasmussen must stay compact and cover huge amounts of ground to stop any long balls or switches of play. They act as the last line of protection, needing to be dominant in the air and quick to intercept any direct passes.
The midfield is the engine of the RB Salzburg lineup, featuring a massive block of six players. Krätzig and Gourna-Douath act as the primary pivots to shield the defense and break the line of the opposition press. Lainer sits slightly ahead to help connect the play, while Kjærgaard and Bidstrup push into advanced roles to drive forward. Kitano operates in the attacking midfield area to create passing lanes and link the midfield block to the forwards. This dense midfield unit allows the team to control the tempo and intercept passes easily.
In the attacking third, the team utilizes two forwards to lead the press. Vertessen plays as a left striker, looking to cut inside and occupy spaces between the lines. Ratkov works as the right striker to hold up the ball and provide a focal point for the midfielders. These two forwards press the opposition center backs constantly to force mistakes. The movement of the wide midfielders into the box creates a heavy central presence that forces defenders to stay deep.
The primary strength of this formation is the massive numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By crowding the middle, RB Salzburg can easily win second balls and execute a high press in coordinated waves. This creates a situation where opponents struggle to find space to pass, leading to quick turnovers. Another advantage is the ability to overwhelm the opposition with six players pressing simultaneously, making it very difficult for teams to play out from the back.
This formation relies on extreme intensity and a high defensive line to function effectively. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to bypass a heavy press or those that play a slow, possession based style.
