Focusing on a direct and vertical style of play, this lineup utilizes a 4-4-2 formation. The team aims to win the ball and move quickly through the thirds to catch the opponent off guard. This setup is built to exploit gaps in the opposition defense by using quick transitions and physical presence in the final third.

The defensive unit begins with GK in goal, acting as the last line of defense. A flat back four consists of RB, LCB, RCB, and LB. The central defenders, LCB and RCB, focus on defending zonally and winning the header during set pieces, while CB acts as a left sided defender to hold the line. RB and LB are tasked to provide width, though they must track back to help when the team sits deep. The back line works to squeeze the space between the defenders and the midfield to maintain a compact shape.

In the middle of the pitch, the team uses a four man midfield to control the center. RDM and LDM operate as a double pivot, where RDM shields the defense and LDM looks to carry the ball forward. To add attacking weight, RAM and LAM play as two tens in the half spaces, looking to find pockets of space between the lines. These attacking midfielders help to connect the defensive and attacking lines by finding the feet of the strikers or making late runs into the box. This midfield group is tasked to press in a mid-block to force a long ball from the opposition.

The attacking front line features two forwards in a partnership consisting of RS and LS. They work together to pin the last defender and create space for the midfielders. RS often plays as a target man to hold up the ball, while LS looks to make runs in behind to hit in behind on the transition. The two strikers press from the front to trigger a press high up the pitch. This duo can combine in tight spaces to split the defense with a through ball or use the width provided by the wide midfielders to receive service.

One major tactical advantage of this 4-4-2 is the ability to create numerical superiority in the attacking third when the two attacking midfielders join the strikers. The formation also allows for great compactness when defending in a low block, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The speed of transition from the double pivot to the two forwards allows the team to counter at pace.

This formation relies on a strong defensive block and rapid verticality to punish opponents. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
