Cagliari Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Caprile · Palestra · Mina o Luperto · Pintus · Mazzitelli o Idrissi · Prati · Rodriguez · Gaetano · Felici · Kilicsoy · Cavuoti o LitetaFocusing on a direct and compact style of play, Cagliari utilizes a 3-5-2 formation to control the middle of the pitch. This lineup is built to remain hard to beat while using rapid transitions to catch opponents out of position. The team looks to dominate central areas and use the width of the wingbacks to stretch the opposition.
Caprile guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back three consists of Rodriguez on the left, Pintus on the right, and either Mina or Luperto acting as the central defender. These defenders often play a high line to squeeze the space in front of them, with Pintus and Rodriguez ready to cover wide areas when the wingbacks push up. The central defender must be dominant in the air to stop crosses, while the others focus on intercepting passes and stepping up to engage attackers early.
The midfield works as a central engine to connect the defense to the front line. Prati and either Cavuoti or Liteta sit in the central roles to shield the back three and break up play. Gaetano operates as the attacking ten, finding pockets of space to create chances and break the line with through balls. To provide width, Palestra and either Mazzitelli or Idrissi play as wide midfielders who must track back to help the defense and push forward to support the attack.
Cagliari relies on two strikers to lead the press and hold up the ball. Felici and Kilicsoy operate as the two forwards, often working in tandem to pull defenders out of position. The attacking movement is designed to create space in the channels for Gaetano to run into or for the wide midfielders to cross. Felici and Kilicsoy must press the opposition center backs to prevent them from playing out from the back.
This formation provides significant tactical advantages through its central density. Having Prati and Gaetano near the center allows for numerical superiority in the middle of the park, making it difficult for opponents to pass through. The team can also create wide overloads when Palestra and the other wide midfielder push high, forcing the opposition wingers to track back and leaving them less effective in attack.
The 3-5-2 lineup provides a solid platform for both defensive stability and rapid counter attacking. This setup is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession, as it allows the team to sit deep and strike quickly.
