Stoke aims to play a highly vertical game focused on quick transitions and directness through a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup seeks to overwhelm opponents by pushing high up the pitch and using heavy pressure to win the ball back quickly in the final third. Johansson stays between the posts to command the area and organize the back line. The defensive unit operates with a flat back four consisting of Stephens on the left and Reyes on the right. In the center, Lawal and Wilmot act as the primary blockers. Lawal provides cover and ability to read the game, while Wilmot uses his aerial strength to win headers during defensive transitions. Stephens and Reyes are tasked to push up and support the wings, but they must track back quickly to prevent long balls from being played behind them.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to protect the center of the pitch. Barber and Pearson sit in front of the defenders to shield the back four and break up play. Barber works to intercept passes and win second balls, while Pearson moves to connect the defense to the front four. This two man unit must stay compact to stop central breakthroughs, as they do not have a central ten to occupy the space between the lines.

Stoke utilizes a heavy attacking lineup with four players positioned high up the field. Bae Jun Ho and Manhoef act as wide wingers who look to cut inside or deliver crosses into the box. The central presence is provided by the two forwards, Rigo and Bozenik, who work as a strike partnership. Rigo plays to hold up the ball and bring others into play, while Bozenik looks to make runs behind the defense. These four forwards press the opposition defenders intensely to force turnovers.

This formation offers significant advantages in terms of attacking numbers and speed of transition. By using four attackers, Stoke can create wide overloads and force opposing full backs into difficult one on one situations. The double pivot of Barber and Pearson allows the team to maintain a level of compactness in the center even while the forwards push high.
